Choosing an LED Off-Road Light Pattern for Your Vehicle

Stage Series LED Light Bar beam pattern

Choosing the right beam pattern for your off-road LED lights makes a big difference in how useful they are on the trail, at the job site, or on the highway. Stage Series Light Bars and LED pods are available in multiple beam patterns — here's how to pick the one that matches your application.

Beam Pattern Overview Video

Driving Light Pattern

The driving pattern throws a 20° wide × 8° tall rectangular beam — larger than a typical spot pattern but still focused for distance. Designed as a supplemental high beam, it works well at driving speeds and as auxiliary lighting off-road. In 6-inch and 12-inch sizes, when properly aimed in accordance with local regulations, the driving pattern meets SAE J581 for on-road use as a driving or high beam light.

Flood Pattern

The flood pattern is what most off-roaders will reach for. It throws an 80° wide × 50° tall spread of light using a pillow optic modifier for even distribution. Ideal as a work light or trail light — illuminates wide areas in the woods, on rocks, or through mud. The even dispersion provides consistent coverage right in front of the vehicle without harsh hot spots.

SAE Fog / Wide Pattern

The fog or wide pattern produces a 100° wide × 8° tall spread — extremely wide but flat, keeping light low on the road surface. In 6-inch and 12-inch sizes, it meets SAE J538 as a fog lamp for on-road legal use. The wide coverage also makes it useful for certain trail applications where side-to-side visibility matters more than distance.

TIR Optics — Why They Matter

All Stage Series light bars and pods use proprietary TIR (Total Internal Reflection) optics. TIR lenses focus and direct 100% of the light output exactly where intended — virtually nothing is lost to glare or scatter. This means more usable light on the trail or road from the same LED output, which is why Stage Series lights outperform competitors at similar wattages.

Light bars are available in 6000K cool white and amber. White works well for auxiliary driving and general off-road use, while amber is preferred for adverse conditions at low speeds — especially useful paired with the SAE fog or wide pattern.

Built to Last

Stage Series light bars are housed in a durable powder-coated aluminum extrusion built to handle corrosion, moisture intrusion, and vibration. Tested in-house from -40°F to 185°F for reliable performance in extreme conditions. Available in sizes from 6 inches to 50 inches — 6, 12, 18, 30, 42, and 50-inch models.

Looking for LED Pods?

If you want a more compact option or different beam pattern configurations, check out the SS3 and SSC2 LED light pods. They're the most intense LED pods on the market, available in flood, driving, wide, spot, and combo patterns across three power levels. Compatible with standard brackets, round mounts, angled mounts, and flush mount hardware kits for bumper or truck bed installations.
